Women's Labor and Prostitution in 19th Century Fiction
This paper was written for my Literature and Law course and explores the intersection of literary fiction and the legal realities surrounding women’s labor, specifically prostitution, in the nineteenth century.
The assignment challenged me to move between textual analysis and historical context, using both literature and primary legal sources to develop a nuanced argument. In this piece, I focused on strengthening my ability to synthesize different types of evidence and construct a cohesive claim about how law and culture inform one another.
As you read, I encourage you to pay particular attention to pages five and six, where I analyze what these texts collectively reveal about the American political climate and its regulation of women’s labor. This work reflects my ability to engage critically with complex material and build arguments that bridge literary interpretation and legal reasoning.

Sentimentalism and Property Law in The Quadroons
This paper, written for my Literature and Law course, examines the intersection of fictional writing and the legal structures that shape the realities depicted within it.
Focusing on Lydia Maria Child’s The Quadroons, I analyze how sentimental fiction exposes the constraints of nineteenth-century property law. In this piece, I worked to move beyond the emotional appeal of the text by closely examining how legal doctrines structure the narrative’s outcomes, strengthening my ability to balance pathos with logical, evidence-based argumentation.
As you read, I encourage you to pay particular attention to how I dissect emotionally charged scenes (such as page 4) to reveal the underlying legal mechanisms at work. This analysis reflects my ability to engage deeply with both literary and legal frameworks, constructing arguments that combine narrative and legal writing.
